FRIDAY PUZZLE — It is entirely possible that I’m biased, but I do enjoy Sam Ezersky’s puzzles. Mr. Ezersky works with me on some of Wordplay’s articles and is my solving buddy on our Crosswords Live Twitter streams, so I have gotten to know his work pretty well.

And that work, like his puzzles, is fresh and full of enthusiasm. Mr. Ezersky (I will never get used to that; he’s Sam to me, just like Will Shortz is Will, not Mr. Shortz) takes you through part of his construction in detail, so I’ll just say that I liked the eight entries he debuted, like HIT JOB, WHAT’S NEXT, AREN’T WE ALL and GOOD DOGGY.

Even the entries that have appeared before are lively. OH REALLY, FREEMIUM, AMPERE, ALSO RAN, EN DASH, COACH K, ENEMY SPY, TYMPANI, FIRE EATERS and I ASSUME make for a puzzle that is fun and a great opening to our solving weekend.

16A: I had the entry TINES stuck in my head for the longest time, even though I gradually realized that it was too short. A tuning fork has a Y SHAPE.

17A: FREEMIUM is a pricing model common in video games and apps, where you can download the app or game free, but you need to purchase elements within in order to play or use it.

18A: Hi, kids! I don’t remember this myself, but DEEDEE Sharp had a 1962 hit called “Mashed Potato Time”:

I know that none of you will be at all shocked to learn that there was an actual dance that went with this song about mashed tubers. Nostalgia being what it is, the dance has been carefully preserved and passed down through the generations, so that we have people like Mr. Cool Cat teaching it to unsuspecting passers-by on YouTube:

20A: Trick question! “An ‘A’ in physics?” is not about a class grade; it’s referring to the abbreviation for AMPERE, or “amp,” which is a unit of electrical current.

28A: FAM is short for “family,” which really refers to your chosen family or your close friends. A friend you are particularly close to in this group would be your BAE.

31A: Interesting play on words. “Shell game?” is SKEET, but the shells the clue refers to are the ammunition used to shoot at the clay targets.

47A: The clue in the web game, where I solve, was simply “-.” I thought this might have been one of those clues that is a continuation of another clue, but the answer happens to be EN DASH. In other formats, the clue is “Minus sign look-alike.”

63A: “Invasive plant?” is not mint or ivy in this puzzle. The “plant” is actually a SPY, and the spy is “invasive” because he or she is an ENEMY.

1D: Ah, the old SOFT G trick. “Feature of Algeria and Egypt” sounds as if it is hinting at a geographic or tourism feature, but in this case, it is referring to the common G sound they make.

2D: The clue for this entry is either “[This clue] + 1” or simply “+ 1.” You need to add one to the clue number, which is two, and the answer is THREE.

12D/21D: Nice twin clue: Both JADE and EMERALD are “Green hue(s).”

28D: Performers who take a lot of heat are FIRE-EATERS.

31D: I have not had the pleasure of a SAKE bomb, but Mr. Ezersky assures me that it is delicious.

32D: If you have something you want to protest, you can always take a KNEE.

34D: I spend time on Reddit, where some people affectionately refer to dogs as “doggos,” so that’s where I went with this clue. “Praise that might be dispensed with a treat,” to me at least,” would be GOOD DOGGO. As I said, I am not alone in this:

The answer is actually GOOD DOGGY, which is somewhat more familiar. Mr. Ezersky has requested in his notes below that it would absolutely make his day if readers would tweet photos of their GOOD DOGGYs to him at @thegridkid. While you’re at it, send them to me @NYTimesWordplay, please. I love a good doggo.

41D: The answer to the clue, “ … per my reasoning,” is I ASSUME. I have been waiting eight years for this. For eight years, whenever I have used the word “assume,” I have quietly linked to one of the best scenes in sitcom television. And now I get to bring it out into the open. All together now: “When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me”:

44D: BROs who might be reading this column: Is this the actual protocol? Does the BRO HUG come after the fist bump and not the other way around?

57D: I love this clue. “Head of lettuce?” looks as if we are supposed to be thinking about a salad, but that’s not where this clue is going at all. “Lettuce” is a slang term for money, and the “head” of things lettuce-like at a company would be the chief financial officer, or CFO.

This puzzle is brought to you by the free Wi-Fi that I couldn’t actually get to work.

I mean this in two senses: I first created the grid while sitting in a packed bus, unable to connect to its “complimentary internet” … and that NW corner, where I began, originally had FREE WI-FI in lieu of FREEMIUM.

That is to say, flexibility is key to balancing liveliness and smoothness in themelesses. When I construct these puzzles, I place the black squares as I go, and let their constraints trickle down to flesh out the eventual skeleton. In this first grid, my top stack is basically finished, and already clears my bar for enjoyment, but I’ve left myself a whole bunch of fun options for 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-Down since their lengths have yet to be fixed. I generally try to cram in as much cool stuff as I possibly can when I get started, and if there’s even one thing that makes me scowl, I peel back and refill.
